An immersive retreat with Simonetta Alessandri and Adalisa Menghini.

A unique combination of skill development workshop and a retreat. We conduct a deep immersion into the work creating a platform for personal renewal and development in the unique landscape of Southern Italy. This workshop is aimed at those interested in deepening their knowledge as a dancer, improviser or performer, as well as anyone who wishes to connect with themselves and others through movement.

The morning sessions begin with the practice of body awareness through the Feldenkrais Method and the principles of Neurophysiology. Both are gentle and powerful approaches to movement that deepen the perception of how we move, thus increasing the quality of coordination and balanced postural tone, as well as creating ownership and pleasure in our dance. From this grounding, we grow into solo improvisation, expanding outward into dynamic, more complex movement. We will revisit and reveal the fundamental skills of Contact Improvisation, such as: giving/receiving weight, falling, leaning, following and flying. The afternoon sessions integrate and arise from these constituent elements. We will focus on the performative potential of the body, expanding our imagination to explore specific compositional tools and improvisational scores, investigating space, time and relationship. We will practice observing and following the emergence of spontaneous group compositions, tuning into the balance between order and chaos.

The discussions will regroup, re-frame and anchor us further, contextualising our experiences by sharing them with the collective knowledge of the group and guests. Against the backdrop of the world’s challenges, we will journey together to emerge with new capabilities and a sense of renewal. Context: The dance hall itself is integrated into the landscape, built to invite breezes in the morning and evening, thus allowing physical work even in the heat. There are beaches nearby and the retreat organization includes group excursions.

Simonetta Alessandri and Adalisa Menghini have built a teaching practice based on their experiences related to the organic development of improvisation and composition using the somatic approach of the Feldenkrais Method. They each have more than 35 years of experience in the fields of dance, performance and wellness – spanning teaching, performing, choreography and event promotion – and all of this informs their work together. They complement and support each other in this journey of learning and renewal.
